But it seems like the majority of instruments are either all-single-coil, or all-humbucker, and that's that. And no phasing. I don't recall ever accidentally flipping a coil or phase switch, cause they're generally much more out-of-the-way than volume knobs or pickup selector switches. I don't get why these options are so unpopular.

With a guitar like a Strat, it's very difficult to get the classic sounds many players are after if you have a humbucker in the bridge. In my experience (and to my ears), guitars like SGs and LPs sound like ass with a split bridge.

Personally, I just don't like the sound of most humbuckers split. Getting a good sound (with splits) is really dependent on the woods and pickups you are using.

Has anyone ever owned or played an Electra Outlaw? Or any Electra guitar?

The main guitar I use is the one on the left. I found it in a pawn shop for $100.00. The guts for the effect modules were removed by someone but I really didn't care. I liked everything else about it.

My only complaint is that I get tired of being asked if the logo (that's carved into the body) is a peace symbol.

As far as I can tell, only the very small (like myself and Chris Knox) can play the Breadwinner effectively. If only they made a proper lefthanded one that I could find! Playing this upside down is pretty impossible whilst sitting down.

yeah ive seen these before.... i'm curious as to exactly what sort of bread you are intended to win with one of those things

i mean, i understand it's ugly, but these things did not catch on at all when Gibson issued them. a half a dozen prototypes were built, and of the few hundred that were produced, most of them weren't even purchased at discounted rates by employees.

is it really that ugly?
somebody insert a Travelling Wilburies joke here. i have to go buy my TG25 tickets.

Aha, the Moderne, the Holy Grail of collectables. I jammed with a dude who had a Moderne copy - a very accurate Japanese rebuild. It was a cool guitar, but in essence just a Flying V you can sit down with - other than that it had all the typical Gibson qualities.

I have a black-on-black breadwinner. It's the first guitar I ever owned. Robert Smith and Colin Newman have been known to play one. Very comfortable for seated playing, but yes, only if you are right handed.

The built-in preamp is really good at allowing the use of out-of-phase pickups. I seem to remember there is some trim-pot on the circuit board you can tweak in the battery cavity.

Of course, from another point of view, having a pre-amp built into the guitar is a mortal sin. I like it though.
