Hate the man all you want, but it's well documented that if anyone carried anyone, Paul carried John. John didn't really know how things worked. He had a lot of great ideas that needed to be arranged and assembled. Macca knew how to do that, and George Martin certainly did as well. Read any of the studio notes books about the Beatles and this will be corroborated 100% of the time. This is not "opinion."

I prefer McCartney with the Beatles, because I think he benefitted from the other three's influences. I feel safe saying, however, that he was the keystone of that band. If the Beatles had formed with "Shemp McGee, boring bass player man" on bass, they wouldn't have gone as far.

As or colaborating with Michael Jackson, history is littered with bad decisions, and most of them happened in the 80s. Starship is a great example. That doesn't mean that After Bathing At Baxter's was a mistake.
Steve Winwood. Wayne Kramer. The Ramones. PiL. Gang of Four. Heart. The Rolling Stones.
All of these musicians went from being the best of the best to embarrassingly bad at some point. Now that a few are on tour again, how many songs are they playing from this period? None. They know.
For this reason, I can't hold Macca's bad choices against him any more than I can hold "Warrior" against the band that made Metal Box, or Hard against the band that made Entertainment.

I've been listening a lot to McCartney and Ram lately....such weird and good records.... Paul is totally loose and almost sketchbook with a portion of the songs while others get full band/studio treatment. I real mish mash... some throw away songs, some classics. For a guy coming out of not only the Beatles but things like the Long and Winding Road, etc. it is really nice to hear how loosey goosey he can get.

Yes, he hit a point in his career where he seemed to flub more than soar. I think this was not until the 80's though and still he had some shining moments there too. His solo records and Wings have their gems and are mostly great listenings.

I'm not a big fan of his songs, solo or otherwise, mostly because I burned out of them when I was young. (And I'm starting to prefer Ray Davies's cynicism and tainted nostalgia to most of the other English pop of that era--especially to McCartney's sing-a-longs for grandmothers.)

But he also moved vegetarianism and animal welfare issues from the fringes into popular consciousness. These particular issues mean a lot to me, and when I look back at the recent history of that movement, one cannot deny that Paul McCartney played the largest role of any animal welfare advocate in the western world.

So for that, he gets a not crap.
