Has anyone else heard this new Sonic Youth record?

Hi,

I've listened to it quite a bit. Kim does a good job on this one and has the better and majority of the songs. She is usually my least favorite.

Thurston has always been my favorite but his are pretty tepid. He does not write good pop songs and is better off with the psychedlic numbers we know and love.

Musically it's pretty tight but Sonic Youth's at it best when it begins to JAM and it really doesn't at all. Glimpses maybe but that's it.

Ha, I just read what I wrote earlier on this thread, and then recalled my invective elsewhere about newer "buzz" (ew) bands I find derivative and uninteresting: "LIFE'S TOO SHORT FOR DECENT." I guess my life is not too short for "decent" if it's Sonic Youth, whether or not they deserve the slack I cut them. Sigh. But I'd still contend that they're on a whole other planet than most of the stuff I find so forgettable.

oh bump.

i bought it in june, i've listened to it nearly every day for the last week or so. i've played it in my bar and no-one complains (why would they, it's a fucking great pop record). i've now come to realise the reason for me feeling less like shit in the mornings after 5 hours sleep is that i'm listening to this album.

i really really like it. dayum.

although, overkill forced me to commute with sonic nurse. i notice they nick the drum bit from dripping dream on one of the new ones. i think the 3rd song on the record. thurston sings, it's real ambient..yeah. but, i guess they're allowed to rip 'emselves off if they so wish. perhap's thats behind the name.

in fact listening to goo the other week, i was drunkenly wishing i was in SY. and saying " i fucking love lee's songs" and "i fucking love steve shelley, what a great drummer" i always do that.

it's not a bad record, but it doesn;t do anything to me. after listening to it 5 times i don't feeel like going back to it at all. they need to radically change tuning of their guitars as 80% of riffs and licks from this album sounds like samples from murray street and sonic nurse. i think they even use the dripping dream riff in one of the songs. pink steam is my favorite track, but it bet working title for it was "stones part 2". overall, i see it as ok-ish but surprisngly safe. still i'd be very happy to hear rather ripped songs on the radio instead of those utterly shitty indie bands.

i agree it's a totally safe record but despite the lack of noise etc.. i'm merely judging it by whether i enjoy the listening experience, not whether it means something or if it moves me.

by being able to write this records though, it does show they can write pop hooks which is just as valid as being able to write a fucked up experimental piece that lasts. writing hooks is a talent and hooks is what grabs ya!

i just happen to have a real thing for their laid back california (if neil young were young these days) kind of approach. like, i'm a sucker for the 'middle 8' in pacific coast highway song you know?

i'll take sister, evol, etc.. when i'm drinking and wanting to go out or having one of those gay ass sitting around drinking and debating the various sonic youth records before moving on to the same discussion except about the jesus lizard..
