On this date in 1964, the Chicago Cubs traded outfielder Lou Brock to the St. Louis Cardinals.

At the time, Cubs manager Bob Kennedy, who didn't think much of the "erratic" Brock, said: "This gives us as good a pitching staff as there is in the league."

The St. Louis Cardinal won the National League pennant in 1964. Lou Brock would go on to have a Hall Of Fame career for the Cardinals. Ernie Broglio, the centerpiece of the deal for the Cubs, would go on to make 33 starts for the Cubs and post a 7-19 record for them.

..and they won the WS from the Yankees.

There's a book called October of '64 or maybe Summer of 64 about the Cards and Yankees teams of that year that's a good van/beach read. The side story of the Phillies losing the NL pennant when they were 6 1/2 games ahead with 10 games left to play is a downer, unless you're a Cards fan.
