Also, I've started using the dbx NR pretty much all the time now. The noise was just too much, and I dont think it hurts the quality any more than any other piece in the chain before the signal hits tape.

hey wiggins, I've got a question for you about this - and this will reveal how ridiculously unknowledgeable I am when it comes to tape machines -

Do you engage the dbx NR while you record, or after you record and are mixing? Because I've tried engaging it after I record, and it really jacks up everything pretty bad on my 388.

You need to engage it both during recording and during playback. It only works its magic when the recording is "enhanced" with dbx and then played back through the magic box as well. Just doing it during recording or playback will not have good results.

Yeah, for the first month or two of having the machine I never used the NR, but now it never gets turned off. It makes such a difference and doesnt really fuck with the sound much.,

I hate to do this, but does anyone want to buy my 388?

Or maybe trade for a Tascam 38 or another good 1/2" 8 track?

Anyone have a 388 manual they are willing to copy, or mail to me to be scanned and returned? Of course I'd pay postage and all that.

I've got a student who got one without a manual and I told him I'd try and find him one. It's also not working quite how I thought it would and manual would help me help him with operating it.

I am the student he is speaking of. I found this thread last night - great resource! I've had my 388 for a few months and will start using it heavily this summer. A manual will be a GREAT help (especially since I'm still learning this stuff)

In regards to the DBX NR, I've heard USE it and DONT use it. I'll have to try it out, maybe try something with 1-4 on and 5-8 off.

Anyway, just registered for the board today. Looking forward to what you gear heads have to say......

So I hate to be a bother, but this has been a difficult thing for me to get straight.

I recently purchased a 388 and have been getting good use out of it. I'm looking to upgrade, and started with a better mixer, a soundcraft 200B. The mixer has 16 imputs, but only 4 outs.

In another post I read about direct audio out insert cables being an effecient solution to multitracking in this situation, however, it looks to me like I would need a quarter inch out from the 200B into an rca in on the 388. Is this correct?

I am totally clueless with this and would greatly appreciate any insight into how to properly do this or why I cannot.

hmmm....I'm on a road trip and don't have that thing right in front of me. But I believe the line ins are 1/4", not rca. I think the line outs are rca.

Depends on how you get into the 388. If you use the line ins on the channel strips it's 1/4", but if you use the PGM buss ins it's RCA.

The latter bypasses the 388s mixer section.
