my favorites:

all-time:
form of rocket - lumber
that whole record has unbelivable instrumental work. "Lumber" is my "Goat"

my others:
jazz june - better off without air
appleseed cast - low level owl vol. 1
fire show - s/t
nerve agents - butterfly collection
paper chase - young bodies heal quickly...

Loren Mazzacane Connors : Hell's Kitchen Park and In Bern w/Jim O'Rourke

I'll second the Nick Drake recommendations, particularly for Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon. Black Eyed Dog from the leftovers comp is good too.

Four Gentlemen of the Guitar : Cloud.

I always liked the combined sounds of Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison, particularly on a song like Foggy Notion but there are many many others.

MBV : Loveless

Any of the Shellac albums.

The Jesus Lizard : Goat and Liar.

Some of the Mogwai or EITS albums.

Frank Zappa : Shut up and play yer guitar but not the other "Guitar" album.

Captain Beefheart : Any but the Mercury albums.

A fair few J Mascis tunes/solos.

Anton Hayman's guitar playing on the Astral Glamour compilation (The Homosexuals collected) is out of this world outfuckingstanding in terms of both tone and playing.

Marc Bolan on Electric Warrior... eg. Life's A Gas. Same thing.

Tom Verlaine, for what he played and how he played it.

Stephen Malkmus on American Water. Kevin Shields on Loveless and the EPs hovering around it. The Mascis guy on You're Living All Over Me. Greg Sage on Is This Real? Raw Power.

My favourite guitar albums.
