not crap- i bought the box set last year. i must say one of the best musical investments i have ever made. youth of america is my favorite album by the wipers. "taking too long" was the first song i heard by them and after that i was hooked. "when its over" is another favorite of mine.

Interesting deconstructionist theory to their music. Greg Sage always seemed like self-contained influence cycle to me.

NC. Even some of their (his) later stuff, like Silver Sail, was somewhat NC.

BTW, I heard from my music elders that the non-Sage musicians in the Wipers repeatedly walked out on / were fired by him so many times that the band was occasionally reduced to Greg on stage with a drum box and sequencer. I would have liked to see "them" as a one-man act.

I've also been greatly enjoying the Wipers Box Set, after finding out about them thanks to this thread. Listening to it I can't help but pick out different veneers of influence in the music, particularly the Trashmen-esque surf drumming, but any recognition is fleeting and doesn't disrupt the whole.

A great original band.

Not Crap.

[Edit: This song 'Romeo' makes me feel little weird]
