Mastodon's last record is pretty incredible -

In response to the earlier post about Keelhaul II, check out the new one (Subject to Change Without Notice). While II is most beautifully dirty, "Subject to Change" captures that energy with a better sounding recording. Check it.

Ved Buens Ende is really great. A supergroup of black metal folks, with the Hellhammer on drums. Very "technical", ie lots of changes/parts/spikity sploikety drumming. But really badass.

"Panzer Faust" by Dark Throne is the one for me. Just totally fucked.

Trapdoor Fucking Exit is great. Quite a splash with the kids in Norge, if I remember right.

And Slaxxmaal, from Bergen. Noise and collage shit with METAL. Image driven, but still pretty neat.

I'm not spelling Slaxxmaal right, because it has the crazy Norge letters in it. The double aa means the "a" with the little zero on top, I believe.

Anyone looking for some good, creative, progressive metal (rather than just straight forward brutality) ought to check out the following:

AGALLOCH-The Mantle ( a masterpiece of "folk metal." their first album; "Pale Folklore" is excellent as well)
GREEN CARNATION-Light of day, day of darkness (One 60 minute long track, members from Emperor & In The Woods)
BORKNAGAR-Empiricism (killer progressive black/viking metal)
ENSLAVED-Below The Lights (psychedelic progressive viking metal, "MARDRAUM" is another great album by this Norwegian band)
OPETH (well every OPETH album is equally good, & worth checking out)
IN THE WOODS- Omnio (excellent doomy album)
