bumble,

Thank you so much for sharing your informed perspective.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa is a holocaust-in-action. We are living through a holocaust, and our generation will be judged on how we respond to the herculean challenge of addressing it. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria faces a 2-billion-dollar shortfall of its already insufficient budget this year, while the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan soars into the hundreds of billions. . . millions of lives could be saved if the will were there. Millions.

Furthermore, as Stephen Lewis tirelessly stresses, the face of AIDS in Africa is female, not male. It's not "the gay disease" there. It's overwhelmingly the disease of women. And there are places in Africa where transmission rates are higher for married women than single, sexually active women. So the fact that circumcision only protects men is important to stress.

Stephen Lewis, the UN Envoy on HIV/AIDs in Africa, is likely to be remembered as one of the 21st century's greatest humanitarian activists--and of its most outspoken feminists. He's a brilliant speaker, too. I cried when I saw him speak. He's been given the boot from his job at year's end, in large part, it seems, because of pressure from the US and S. African gov'ts in response to his measured criticisms, most of which can be found in his compiled Massey lectures Race Against Time. The audio for the first lecture is online here. Well worth one's time, IMO.

Some of his more recent speeches are online here.

And many of his insights and criticisms of the international response to the crisis are outlined in this interview transcript

EVAN SOLOMON:

WHY HAS THIS BEEN SUCH A TRAGIC PANDEMIC FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY?

STEPHEN LEWIS:

Quite simply because of gender inequality, because the women of Africa have no sexual independence. They have no capacity to say no to predatory male sexual overtures, they can’t say wear a condom arbitrarily they can’t, negotiate safe sex, many, many, many… marriages are very young women and older men who’ve had a lot of sexual experience and bring the virus into the marriage.

And you have these astounding studies that show the higher prevalence rates in marriage. And the and the vulnerability of women is therefore really acute and there aren’t laws on inheritance rights or property rights or tough laws against sexual violence which is increasingly pervasive in societies which are fraying at the edges and coming apart.

Let me give you one figure because it’s so evocative.

There are roughly 8 million 15 to 24 year olds in Africa who are infected. 76% are young women and girls.

Me, I'm uncut - but that's because few people in Ireland have it done. My first girlfriend in the USA thought it was "weird and a little off-putting" that I was intact. Grrr!

I've heard this retarded statement from US girls too. I'm uncut and I find this offensive. My cock is as nature intended it and is staying that way. I keep him clean and i've never had any problems so far. I do hope that I get to hear this comment coming from an American woman again. I'd just ask her if it is ok to cut off her pussy lips with a toenail clipper and also her tongue as i'm sick of hearing you say "like" like 20 times every sentence. THAT"S "weird and a little off-putting"

LORD ALMIGHTY, I CAN GET BEHIND THIS.
