I'm going to 'third' the complete nonsense that is this statement. At best, I suspect you could be misinformed, at worst plain stupid.

YES! I AM STUPID. AND SORRY, the band I am referring to in my above rant is not LB, but DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979.

Forgive me, I am old and jaded. I heard some hipster 20-somethings rage about the DFA1979 band and I saw the two person bass and drum duo thing and got STUPID MIXED UP.

Still, I think, for me, Dirty Three still would probably win this poll...

Nice rant. You win my pole.

I enjoy both of these bands. I find it silly that people have to argue about either one's merit, or whether or not it qualifies as "art".

Given the desert island option, however, I would easily go with Dirty Three. In my mind, their music is much more dynamic and emotionally evocative and therefore easier to have an attachment to it.

Lightning Bolt, in my opinion, has yet to make an album that is great from start to finish, and I actually thought they were kind of treading water with "Hypermagic Mountain" by trying to just up the intensity instead of seeing where else they could go. Conversely, Dirty Three's "Cinder" is one of the best records I've bought in the last 12 months.

No contest.

That's the most laughable thing you've said yet... seriously, "expert muscians"?

I'm curious...

Do you play an instrument?

If so, for how long?

I can't stand when people who play instruments(I play 6 some very proficently some not so) tell people that don't they're not entitled to have an opinion about musicianship. Both members of lightning bolt are extremely talented musicians, if you don't like what they're doing then fine but why be an arrogant prick because you play an intrument? I don't know you personally and I've never heard you play an instrument, but I doubt highly that you could play anything that LB plays within your first six months of picking up an instrument. I admit I may be wrong, but you can only build up muscle strength so fast. Playing an intrument fast is mostly muscle memory and strength anyone could learn how to play that fast but of course it takes time and I think more than 6 months.

Dirty Three.

Lightning Bolt.. I have a friend who likes them and he's played their music for me, I have to agree with BadComrade - they're kind of boring and stupid.

Whenever someone mentions Lightning Bolt in my neck of the woods, they always make it a point to preface it with, "it's just a drummer and bassist" - as if that were some kind of nigh-impossible combination, personally I think Big Business does it better.

BadComrade wrote:Lightning Bolt are fucking boring and stupid. Wow, you can crank your bass amp up all they way and play through a bunch of pedals... heavy. The drummer can spazz out on a couple of drums and cymbals for 45 seconds at a time... uh, impressive. I'm sure those of you who are reading this that like LB think that I just "don't get it". I do get it, and that's why I think they suck.

Jim White's drumming is some of the most dynamic you'll ever see. Warren Ellis and Mick Turner ain't too shabby either.

The Dirty Three.

I don't hate LB as much as BC does, but Dirty Three...that's a fucking incredible band.
