i hope you all realize that these bands DO NOT SUCK (in my opinion, and for the most part). the problem is that you had some sort of false expectation that was not borne out.

It is very interesting how you all can have some preconceived notion about the Clash, Sonic Youth, The Fall, the Melvins, etc. that so fucks up your head, that when you actually listen to the band's music it doesn't make you happy. Fucking bizarre.

Context, i guess, is deadly sometimes, as mentioned in another thread. To me, the biggest challenge in coming to a new band is to clear out the expectations and get down to the basic question: "do I like this or not".

It is much better now that I am sort of out of touch with any particular scene, and do not have close contact with any people involved in any "scene". Of course, I am older now and don't care about liking what my friends like, or appearing "hip" any more. I like a lot more stuff now too, or I can at least appreciate a band for what they are, without worrying about what the world thinks of them.

well, of course. the thread is about bands that disappointed. i would have thought a band would have to be significantly hyped/promoted in order to have any expectation therefore, as can so often be the case, all the worlds superlatives cannot make up for what is mediocre, therefore if you don't end up loving the hyped to death product, you will be disappointed! and of course, these are the opinions of the people who posted as is yours! mr stating the bleedin obvious!

who doesn't have preconceived notions of anything? your brain would be dead if you didn't! that's not to say those notions can't be disproved it's just that i personally think it's all to easy to like stuff because everyone else does, and everybody is a culprit. i would say guilty but guilty of what? i don't know. that's why i didn't say it..do you stil think i should go into law? i would lose cases merely by contradicting myself all the live long day....i cannot argue on the internets. let's do this in person. can we have a massive debate at the t&g pary? they are more fun than silence..

my point exactly. somebody mentioned the Melvins, the Clash, the Fall, etc. I think those bands are far from fuckin' mediocre. Wildly inconsistent, yes, but when they are on, they are good, dammit. It is my opinion that the non-mediocrity of these bands is self-evident, and therefore they are objectively non-mediocre.

So for someone to have their head on so sideways as to come to the Fall (say) and hear their music and find it mediocre (or CRAP), well the whole concept just blows me away. What kind of hype and preconceptions would there have to be in a person's head to warp them so badly that they don't totally love the Fall? Staggering.

I know, I love the Fall. I know some people don't. I know this as a fact. And I know that, on some level, I cannot grasp the concept that a person who likes other music I like would completely fail to appreciate the Fall.

Relativism. Objectivism. Peer Pressure. Unmet Expectations.

So sad that these stupid things keep you nice kids from liking these fine, fine bands. So sad.

FThorr - if you cannot go into law, try going under it. going around it may be frought with severe risk.

Why get so upset because somebody doesn't like a band you do?

I'm not upset.
I just can't stand being right all the time and having to point out other people's errors.
Maybe if I wasn't the only one doing all the work around here, it would be a different story.
