Since the thread on the London Astoria came up and the Metro thread was ressurected I wondered:
What is your favorite place (past or present) to see bands?
If you are in a band, where's the best place to play?
Currently I feel fortunate to have the 9:30 club and the Black Cat nearby. The Black Cat books some really good shows and I think the 9:30 is a really nice place to see bands.
But the best place to see live music in my opinion is The original Tipitina's (Napoleon & Tchopitoulas Streets) in New Orleans. This is where I saw all the great shows of my youth. Another place where I saw some great bands was the Bayou on Chimes Street in Baton Rouge. Horrible stage, bad sound but great bands.

I'm no authority, but in my limited experience, Chicago's Metro and DC's 930 are the exact same club. Same room, same setup, same staff. I dunno anything about the owners of either other than stories that don't mean much to me.
The Black Cat is a great place, and I love it, but I don't think it qualifies as one of my favorite places to see shows. I think the sound in the backstage is usually for shit, and the upstairs is too big a room. Don't get me wrong... for that size room, I think the mainstage is *great*. I'd take it over Chicago's Double Door anyday. It's just that room size, it's a little bigger than my favorite size.
I know it's an easy one, but Lounge Ax was both my favorite place to play and my favorite place to see shows. Everything about it was so great, except the neighborhood.
I really like Schuba's, in Chicago.
I was really impressed with The Call, in Providence, the one time I was there like 9 years ago. Don't know if it's even still around.
I liked the place I was just at last Friday, a place in St Louis called Off Broadway. Nice room, nice sound system, and they're in the process of making the place better than it already is, which is cool. I
only got to hear a little bit of the room's problem, which is that it doesn't do well with really loud cymbals. The last band was loud enough that I got the gist. But they're fixing it up, so at some point it seems like it'll be really nice. I was only there the one time, but I already wanna go back there.
But yeah, Lounge Ax. That was a great place to play. So nice. And to see shows, it was the best, I think. My favoritest.

3I really like St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit / there is a kick ass venue in the basement too but I forget what it was called.
