It is pretty difficult to know what you're doing when you first start out. Check 'Help' -> 'Late start' for some decent tips. You have 5 days of immunity to figure things out.

In general, I'd suggest building one level of each of the recourses at a time,
meaning; add a level to the Lumber Camp, then one level to your headquarters,
then one level to the Clay Pit, and finally one level to the Iron Mine. Mix it
up as you wish. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'm going to play aggressively because I've got a MASSIVE tribe surrounding
me. I don't suggest players new to resource management games do this.
Stick to the basics, and you'll grow well over the 5 day start period.

Also, sending troops to villages early in the game might not be a good thing
