Great way to start. I just can't say they're crap, because dammit I like it when limeys wallop the blues, and because dammit, they rocked and wrote great songs.

I couldn't agree more. Usually I like "source" music, but when it comes to blues, I like what the Brits did to the genre more than the original works.

I realize I am surrendering part of my (nonexistent) hip quotient here, but I don't give a shit about being hip

I'm right there with you.

Hip or not hip, I have a hard time understanding how anyone hates Led Zeppelin. Obviously it's fine, but i don't get it.
Sure, classic rock stations, Stairway (which I could care less if I ever hear again), the 'wizard' element, and other things make it hard sometimes, but when I hear a song like Achille's Last Stand or In The Light, I'm just floored by the heaviness of it all.
I think I like them more now than when I was a kid.

i never really listened to the first album, for some reason i thought i wouldn't like it even though i like a lot of zep. then for some reason i can't remember my girlfriend and i put on the last track, "how many more times" i think it is. we started dancing around in an intentionally humorous way and then suddenly we were having great sex. i have to give zep credit here.

and yes, john paul jones is underrated and awesome.

Anyone who votes Crap on this poll needs to take the cotton balls out of his ears, shove them in his mouth, and walk away quickly.

How can you not love the utter genius that is IV? "Stairway to Heaven" might be the most overplayed song this side of "Back in Black", but its melody and lyrics are so beautiful. And how about "Going to California" and "Four Sticks"?

Oddly enough, I'm not really keen on John Bonham. What I love about Led Zeppelin is Page's songwriting and Plant's soulful voice.

Not Crap.

Yes, and somewhere there's a hobby shop with 21 untouched pewter hobbit figurines.

Jacques,

You always keep reiterating the Tolkien influence but I find it tenuous at best. I can only thing of a couple of songs with a direct reference. Still that was funny....

As much as I admire Leadbelly, these men were both pretty conventional. The blues gets way better than that. Please don't die without trying out Skip James.
