One of the best fucking bands to appear in the 1991 mainstream.
In Utero is fucking awesome.
NOT CRAP =10

73It's unfortunate that there is a somewhat 'air of musical lofty intellect' (to paraphrase an EA saying) surrounding Nirvana and their music, as often they are deemed as alternative sell outs; due mostly to the success of Nevermind.
I find this hard to swallow, especially as I suspect the people saying they don't like their music, actually do but appear reticent to admit to liking something considered too mainstream amongst their perceived musical peers.
The fact is, Cobain's blood, sweat, jizz (ed: steady on!)and vomit are splattered across all their albums, and I think their music and attitude contributed to the most honest/sincere and yet, blistering pieces of work to emerge onto the musical scene. In Utero being the pinnacle of that.
Highlights for me are 'Milk It' and 'scentless apprentice' demos from the recent box-set - and god just listen to Breed, Aneurysm, Lounge Act.. just amazing.
Just like 'em for getting rid of shit hair-metal if anything! (and knocking Jackson off the album charts at the time)..

I was addressing the issue of the "bands" name dropped in question. As for Steve and the recording of In Utero, I don't doubt it, also because they were unsatisfied with the Vig mix on Nevermind, too polished. At the same time, I'm sure they also wanted Steve because of the other bands he had recorded in the past (like the Pixies) and I have read that Cobain liked Big Black.
Actually, I've read just the opposite. In fact, I'm pretty damn sure that I've seen an interview in which Cobain said something along the lines of "I only had Songs About Fucking, I didn't like it very much/not for me." He goes on to praise the guitar playing in Scratch Acid. I wouldn't be surprised if you read that he did like Big Black. It's bullshit though, I promise. In all fairness though...Cobain wasn't exactly a picture of consistency (on a number of levels).

77I like Nirvana, and Dave Grohl hit the drums like a bastard--a quality I always admire in a drummer. Not Crap.

78I first saw them open for Dinosaur Jr. a long time ago, and really liked Bleach a lot. My friend dubbed me a copy of Nevermind, and even before it was popular, I didn't like it. There were no balls to it at all and it was oppressively simple. I liked Bleach because it was more like Melvins than Nirvana.
I voted crap. They are an OK band, but there were simply way better bands at this time. Their 3 chord major key stuff and Starbuck's acoustic songs (like Polly) were such a turnoff. They sold a lot of units and popularized grunge more than any other band. I did say I voted crap, right? They were the perfect band to do this. Melvins were far too ugly to cater to swooning teenage girls, which is the music market. Their "smells like teen spirit" video obviously resonated more with high school students than anyone else. Clever marketing of an OK product. Hey, it's the music biz... It makes the rest of corporate America almost seem pleasant and fair.
