White Gold... 14K.

Not expensive at all, in comparison to the price of the goddamned appetizers and everything else.

Mine is two years old and still providing me with percussion fun on any surface I habitually tap upon. Maybe a few lil scratches, but thats just mantastic.

Tungsten. It's an unusual color, heavy, and is very hard to scratch. If I were to ever get married, I'd either make the rings in sterling or white gold, or get tungsten. I'd like to get one anyway actually, the likelihood of getting married is pretty much slim to none.

I've got a white gold ring that's worn next to a sterling band that I made, but never finished (not polished), and while the color and shine of the gold is nicer, it's still all scratched to hell like the sterling. I'm really hard on stuff though, I've got a stainless steel watch that's less than a year old and it's beaten up already, so tungsten seems like it would be the best choice for durability. I gave one to mastermind for xmas a couple years ago and it's still shiny and pretty.

The weight and feel and look of white gold is pretty lovely. I was given an eighty year old family ring once and it had an amazing luster--white gold is silvery but still warm looking.

I also had a platinum jobbie and was surprised to find out that it is a pretty soft metal. The scratch-free surface lasted about as long as the engagement.

My wife and I have 7mm comfort fit platinum bands...we love them. If your concerned with it lasting a very long time, i'd say platinum is a good choice. My mom gave me my great-grandmothers platinum wedding band and it still looks great.

If you have money too spend check out this jeweler:
http://www.stuartmoore.com/

He makes bands that are smaller at the top and wider at the bottom so that it fits perfectly....it's kinda shaped like your finger. I had the pleasure of trying one on and can confirm that it was the best fitting piece of jewelry I have ever worn. They are also made from VERY high-end platinum...the web-site tells you about the process. Unfortunately they are REALLY expensive. I'd be sucking cock in Chinatown till I was fifty just to pay it off. Maybe your financial situation is better than mine.
