I was a devotee of Group Sex back in the day, but even as early as their second record, with its goofy cover of "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," I tired of them. I think that Keith Morris' smart-ass whine turned me off, being closer to Jello Biafra than, say, John Brannon or Dan Kubinski. Still, that band kicked ass, and as I've said elsewhere, the circa 1984 Circle Jerks with Biscuits on drums is the tightest, most powerful hardcore band I ever saw. But I never thought I'd listen to 'em again.
Then, a year or so ago, I saw The Decline of Western Civilization for the first time in probably a decade, and I was totally blown away by the Cirtcle Jerks (Lucky Lehrer in particular). I picked up Group Sex on CD soon thereafter and was pleased to find that it holds up very well. Morris' vocals seem smart and funny to me now, while still possessing plenty of Rotten bile. Even moreso I was impressed by the hooks. Maybe only the Misfits were writing catchier songs (among American punk bands) in 1982.
Not crap!
