Thunderdome: Which Mad Max Movie?

Having enjoyed them all quite a bit, I must firmly say that Road Warrior is the greatest. It has the best atmosphere - no sense of the presence of any kind of civilization whatsoever. Just wastelands, roving bands of madmen, and a tiny oil refinery. A review I read of it once perfectly encapsulated its appeal. I paraphrase, "An existentialist action film- roaming bands maraud and pillage to find gasoline, so that they can continue on to roam and pillage."

Plus, I think it was this film more than any other that made the post-nuclear holocaust wastland theme into a real genre, sort of the way JRR Tolkien singlehandedly created the orcs and elves fantasy genre.

As such, I am especially grateful to Road Warrior for having inspired the game Operation Overkill II, which was easily the most fun I ever had in the pre-internet BBS world.

Road Warrior has its moments, but, come on. The Goose is a far better sidekick than the goofy helicopter dude. Toecutter is a superior antagonist than Lord Humungus. Johnny the Boy is incredible. The blond boy toy doesn't even have any lines. The feral kid is amusing for about five minutes, but he's no Fifi.

The ratio of classic lines is like twelve classic lines in Mad Max for every one in Road Warrior. The motorcycles are far dumber in the Road Warrior. There are no sax solos in the Road Warrior. There are no Sandman Panel Vans in the Road Warrior.

Mad Max, by a mile.

I refuse to acknowledge that Thunderdome exists.
