CBGB's is actually open till Halloween, but no more shows will be there.

It was a fun place, I'm sure it will wind up being a Hard Rock style club in L.A...

Lots of memories, *sniff* *sniff*. We played w/ Volcano Suns, Ball, Anti-Seen, CBGB's had a cool little recording set up, too. I also remember driving back w/ the Frogs listening to the show we just did on the cassette player.

Ok old folks, let's hear some CBGB tales.

They are. :)

I worked there and knew Hilly pretty well. The real fuck-out in this situation
is that Hilly is sick, and it sounds like he might not even see the reopening.

It's a really sad thing, made worse because NY no longer has CBGB and OMFUG.

WTF?

are you guys serious?

Absolutely. I've seen heavy rock shows at pretty much every venue in the Manhattan and Brooklyn that will book them. For places of comparable size, CB's invariably had the best sound.

But on that note, I highly recommend to any NYCers checking out a place in Chinatown called Fontana's. They recently began booking bands and I think it's a damn good place to see a show. It's a huge bar overall, but the stage area itself is very cozy.

I find the mourning for CBGBs somewhat strange because it had been effectively dead for at least ten years. They had almost exclusively been booking mook hardcore acts and one syllable pseudo-metal bands (Prong, Clutch, etc.) and were no longer bothering to put on any shows that were even remotely interesting on regular basis. If they had, then maybe they could've paid their rent and stayed in business or moved somewhere else in New York.

Almost every big city in America had a really cool club where all the punk rock bands played and most of them are closed. It's no big deal. I think Patti Smith is kind of annoying, but she apparently said the last show that CBGBs isn't a shrine and she's right. No one laments the passing of the old 9:30 Club or DC Space or Trenton City Gardens or dozens of other places around the United States that used to put on cool shows, which CBGBs didn't even do anymore.
