do you guys think the C414 is worth the retail cost?
i know they're a staple in many studios but are there any other alternative that may even surpass the mic and be more afforable?
cheers!

2I do think they are worth it. The quality and versatility of this mic is pretty awesome...
Talk to some local dealers, though. The markup on these guys...especially a matched pair...is considerable. If I was at work, I would PM the dealer cost to you (don't tell anyone).

in 2003, the 'educational discount' (which i think is somewhere around 6% above the distributors cost) for a 4 pattern (before the 5 pattern LED versions) 414B/ULS was $666.
BUT ND, YOUR PRICE IS TOO LOW TO PRINT! CALL NOW FOR YOUR PERSONALIZED PRICE!!!
tiresome.

4Damn. I'm home again...
Next time I'm there, I may or may not post the proper dealer cost for my company to purchase these guys. I think it's a little less than the 'devil's price' there, but not much.

5funny u shud say
we did a comparison today in our studio with all our mics on one clean guitar track, mic pointing at the sweet spot about 1 inch away from the grill/cloth.
the 414 was terrible in both omni and cardioid, we compared it against an akg solidtube, neuman u87, and a rode nt2.

6The C414 is very much worth its cost. Buy two right now. Use them as a stereo pair out in the room. You will like! Use them as your drum OH's...you will like. Use them on piano; you will like!
For my money, the most versatile of condensors. There are definitely better mics out there, but this one is well worth its price for the versatility. I've not heard any of the fancy new ones with the stupid LED's in it, but hopefully that's the only design characteristic they changed.

8Maybe he's interested in the price of the B-ULS tea leaf.
I'm too lazy/not proficient enough in Chinese to get it for him.

9Hmm. Weird. We only have access to the two teas above...
Ok, just got off the phone with the reps. Guess what? Just like most other items that are 'the reference' for their field (the Shure V15VxMR phono cartridge being a personally infuriating example), that particular type of tea has been discontinued.
Ebay fun for everyone...
