Question for Steve Albini-Re: Letters to Santa

1
Steve, I loved going to Letters to Santa in Chicago. Unfortunatly I'm stuck in Los Angeles this year taking care of animals. I love what your girlfriend does and want to start something like that here. Do you think there could be a way she could contact me? I know it's her thing so I don't want to steal it from her. I just wonder if she could help me with pointers on how to get it started out here.

Thank You

I'm speaking generally here, and not for Heather, but she may chime in if she has anything more to add.

There are letters to Santa in almost every main post office. Just go there, ask the postmaster to show them to you, read a few, and try to help out a family or two. There's nothing "official" about any of it, and it's dead easy. You and a couple of friends can make a huge difference in the lives of a family or two.

Originally, Heather would do just that. When she started bringing home more than a couple of the letters (when you read them, you'll see why), she started looking for some way to raise money, and thats how the various fund-raising enterprises started.

The fund-raising stuff is very much a secondary part of the thing, and you shouldn't worry about it until you've gotten your feet wet in a small way, which is easy.

Just go read the letters. That alone will break your heart, open your eyes and make you a more compassionate person.

i totally agree with this. if i wasnt such a self-absorbed asshole i would feel much better spending a few hours on christmas morning serving food to people than i would sending a check for a few hundred bucks to strangers in december.
