i'm going to toss in another vote for the newest joanna newsom disc. it's a very challenging and rewarding listen. van dyke parks exhibits his tasteful arrangements once again.

and has anybody given that killers record a shot? swear, kids... if you dig what brian eno used to do in the late 80's and early 90's, it's worth a listen. it's like the best u2 record that u2 never made.

These are Pitchfork's Top 50 albums of 2006.

I know so few of them - I think this probably marks the point where I assume the role of a curmudgeonly uncle and declare myself divorced from particular trends in contemporary music. Son, I don't NEED to hear it to know it's shit.

For the record, I loved albums by Uzeda, Loscil, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Polaris (thank you Matt Gringo!), Scott Walker and Rosy Parlane.

Joanna Newsom, Sonic Youth, Boris, The Necks and Nina Nastasia all made worthwhile and very enjoyable records.

My favourite album of the year is perhaps Congotronics 2 by 'Various Artists'.

The girlfriend-bought-it-thought-I'd-hate-it-but-turns-out-it's-a-top-notch-pop-album award goes to Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators.
