I've been adopting indie rockers for years. When did they start coming with personalities?

If everybody who played and listened to rock music looked like Mike Watt, rock music would be way more boring than it already is!

I have to break with the the tone of the conversation...I just saw Smog and Joanna Newsom last night at the Madison Pop Festival. The nu-indie kids were totally rude during his set, just talking the whole time, the glut of them all jammed together at the front of the stage waiting for Newsom.

Smog didn't go on until like 10:40 (the show was supposed to start at 9:30). He was still great (despite the incredible waiting time...a guy from a good Madison group theorized that their contracts may have been fucked up), but a great deal of the crowd didn't seem to like him. Most people I talked to said he sucked. He played a great cover of "Bathysphere" during his set. I don't think the nu-wavers knew it was a cover...but they probably would have sold their souls to see Cat Power.

Newsom didn't go on until like 11:45. There was supposed to be an eleven piece orchestra (nope). She sang all those "neo-classical" songs with just her harp. I had a couple beers downstairs, watched a song, and left. The indie kids bust a fucking nut over Newsom. The cheers at the end of every song sounded as if they had come merely to hail their conquering elfin heroine. I don't get it. She's not even that good. Her arranger is what makes that stuff "interesting." If Joni Mitchell had played the student union for free, no way would that insanely sized crowd have been there (granted, now that I think about it, the baby boomers would have invaded in droves). It's frustrating...post a story on Pitchfork and it activates the hipster masses. A pretty common complaint I guess, but saints alive--did they come out. I just wanted to see Smog in peace...go out, drink with my brother, lose his bike lock...etc...

Ha!! Brilliant! I bought one of these in Cochin- the G.150 STANDARD I believe. It served me very well on my adventures as it was light, could take a battering and still stay in tune. It ended up in the care of some hippy as I couldn't be bothered to bring it back, but I did love that guitar. I still have a pick with the logo which takes pride of place in my wallet. There were also the copyright dodging Fendar and Yemeha- all actually not bad guitars for the price, though Indian guitar string did seem to be closer to sitar strings in the way they could just cut straight through calluses I’d spent years building up
