Bands that " jam" without being wankers?

Tuuvan Throat Singers. Is that "jamming"?

Also, I can't recommend any SCG records, but I *can* recommend some of the stuff Alan Bishop (from SCG) has put out on Sublime Frequencies. It will rip off the top of your head. The one from Burma (_Princess Nicotine_) is great--so is the Iraqi one (_Choubi Choubi_) and the Ethnic Minority Music of Northeast Cambodia one.

yeah i know, mad. i thought they were astonishing, as did a bunch of people i was watching them with. but one of my housemates said they reminded her of a bunch of "jamming old hippies". i could have screamed.

I agree. I used to like seeing these guys live. K.I.L.A.S. is one of my favorite guitar records. That said, the last two times I've seen them, it's been one 15-minute hippy jam after the next. Even the pop songs disolve into lazy noodling until I don't even think doug knows what song they're playing anymore.

Conversely, My Morning Jacket, who has huge hippy potential manages to transcend shitty jam band status, because they fucking bring the rock live.

I second on Sonic Youth. Also Pavement.
