I was in bar on AC/DC Lane in Melbourne (yes, they have changed the name in honour) the other night. There is a bunch of letters on the wall from Bon Scott to his then ex-wife that he wrote whilst he was on tour. I can't believe how honest they are and so well written even though he is clearly out of his nut when he wrote them. How many of us can write hand-written letters when fucked up?
Below is a transcript of the picture I took of one of them.

83POWERAGE
I've heard their more popular stuff all of my life, and I never really liked them until about 3-4 years ago. Powerage really opened my eyes to what AC/DC is all about. Concise songs, great catchy riffs, perfect fucking rhythm, perfect plain rock'n'roll sound for every instrument, all played fiercely. Easily one of the very finest pieces of rock'n'roll ever made.

So this is your definition of honest and well written? Hang about, are you the chap who went to see a James Bond movie and complained about someone bringing his kids? I rest my case.

It is my opinion that his taste is lame.
Ha Ha
But not as lame as your predictable Lets-jump-onto-the-bandwagon posts.

86Even the relative amount of "crap" votes here is fucking heresy.
The Bon albums are the best rock albums ever made. Preferences go to Let There Be Rock, Powerage, and Highway To Hell. I had given Highway To Hell the slight edge over Powerage. Although Bon was a bit more relaxed on Highway, it was solid songwriting all the way through.
Then I saw the Family Jewels DVD set, and saw the Powerage songs being done live. Then I gave the edge to Powerage as best AC/DC album. Respecting Bon's mental state at the time, he was at the peak when he was figuratively pulling his hair out, yet at the same time, was at the peak of his frontman performance in confidence. "Next To The Moon" is my favorite AC/DC song, with "Let There Be Rock", "Down Payment Blues", and "Jailbreak" being very close seconds.
Back In Black I'm still conflicted on... I highly respect Brian, and he really did save that album, as I couldn't imagine anyone else being able to do that. But its only their best Brian Johnson album, still. I see Tim's point way above about it being the best rock record to teach yourself rock n' roll to, no matter if you're learning guitar or bass.
For Those About To Rock, We Salute You is a bit underrated in comparison. It fizzles out in the second half, but the first half of that record is the best of the Johnson era.
After that, it's diminished returns until they change things up with "Thunderstruck" and become a slightly different band with Ballbreaker and Stiff Upper Lip. Angus's playing changes, which was needed. Those last few albums are underrated as well.
Yes i love this band.

By the way, I have heard three different interpretations of the beginning of "For Those About To Rock" - which one do you favour?1st & 2nd string, round about the 12th fret
1st and 2nd string, open B
1st & 3rd string, 12th fret-ish
In my mind's ear, it's not an open string, and the interval seems farther apart than one string--you know, in terms of timbre, the way a fretted low A seems deeper than a ringing A string.
So I think the third option.
Yeah, I've since figured this out. The part is recorded loud, so the open B rings sympathetically sometimes. I read it back and it really doesn't seem like I know what Im talking about, does it?
This gets to the genius of the rhythm playing--Malcolm very, very rarely plays more than four strings tops, and most of the time it's two or three.
And he selects the particular strings and voicings and his chord positioning very deliberately.
And he will play a given riff two or three different ways depending on where it is in the song--intro build-up, post-chorus comedown, rave-up part. Often the rhythm is the same, but he will add a note, play it farther up the neck, play a previously fretted note on an open string, etc.
Not even getting into his picking technique, muting, etc. It's extremely sophisticated playing.
You can learn most of what there is to know about playing hard rock rhythm guitar by listening carefully to all of Back in Black. It's basically all there. And he continues to get it right on every record, even when the songs are not up to snuff. He's absolutely terrific.
I agree completely. Watching the Family Jewels DVD is quite revelatory in this regard. I kind of can't believe he's playing some of those rhythm parts live - the chord changes are almost too clean.

89What DVD of them live is best to begin with? I'd prefer Bon-era, but any'll do. Dylan, I assume you recommned Family Jewels. Anyone know how the Donington one is?

Six months late: the Donnington dvd is great. The best live footage (with Bon) of them is currently unavailable, unless you can track down an old VHS copy of them playing Paris. If you scrounge the internet you'll find some downloads of a scorching performance at the Glasgow Apollo, filmed in 1978. Among the best rock footage ever filmed.
It doesn't surprise me one bit that Adam CR doesn't like AC/DC. People who can't untie their head from their rectum tend not to "get" this band - like there's anything to get. They fucking rock. They call their recording process "building the shed." They had the best rock singer ever (Bon Scott). They have the unique distinction of making bagpipes rock (Long Way To The Top).
And I don't give a fuck if Steve likes them, or if anyone likes them because he does - what a patronising fucking thing to suggest! I've been listening to AC/DC since I was 2 years old, because my parents are cool as fuck. I've never hidden my affection for them. AC/DC are the opposite of bullshit and the epitome of what rock is all about. As a drummer friend once said to me: "A lot of bands rock, but none rock like the DC."
There's more to the picture than meets the eye, as someone else once said.
People who don't like AC/DC, like people who don't like The Ramones, are jolly well fucked.
