sorry, i did not read the whole thread, maybe it is said already...
but a D112 in combination with a closed resonant head is not a good choice because you do not get as much air pressure for the D112 to be able to work with as with a open r. head.
the bass drum provides more tone than punch (subs) with a closed reso head.

plus, between 2,5 and 5 kHz the freq. range of the D112 itself has a raise. thats where your kick sound is resident. (depending on the tightness of the hitz head)

(try a large diaphragm condenser mic and) play around with the reso head and listen to different setups.

Thanks guys. It'll be some time before i decide and get the microphone because i'm working on an old kit's restauration rightnow. The kick of this kit may end up being 16"x16" because the 22" shell is in realy bad shape, so i may have to give thaught to recording a 16" aswell in wich case i'll probably go with the EV.

i really love the ev nd868.

never heard of the nd868. how does it sound like? It's pretty cheap compared to the other mics mentioned in this thread.

i must say...i am an owner of a jungle kit.
i recently recorded a 16" bass drum...
good combination: 16" bass drum with NO reso head and an audix CX-101 large diaphragm condenser.
that mic is not that expensive. try to rent it and make up your own thoughts.
(as if you wouldn't do that in the first place... )

It's a tuned microphone. It has a prominent boost in the bottom end, a wide dip in the low mids and a boost in the high mids - somewhere around 2k I guess.
I have one but haven't used it for more than a year. As far as I remember it has more bass and less "kicky" high mids than a D112 has. I'm not obsessed with bass drums with massive low end and usually go for M88s and sometimes D112s but a friend of mine always had a fondness for it and borrowed it whenever he needed a kick drum mic. I almost forgot that I have it. I think I should give it a try again.
