Check out PAK too! And RUINS but that's probably a given...

You played a show with Ahleuchistas? As a member or as the member of another band? If the latter, what were you called?

Tried to listen to the recent record by the Ruins' drummer and Haino, and was excited for it, but in the end found it a bit silly. Am I missing something? I just wish that people playing in that manner would listen to each other more, rather than merely wailing simultaneously. Perhaps I am a neophyte for saying as much?!!! :)

i remember saying to my friend while aleuchatistas played (opening for kayo dot), "if i have to hear one more post-punk frenetic jazz group i'm going to shoot myself/everyone else." it's true. i'm sick of pseudo-dysrhythmia rip-offs where people play jazz rock sped up and with punk style. it doesn't appeal to me for the same reason hella doesn't -- it's just a bunch of riffs strung together. there's no song structure, no talent (other than playing fast and tight), no mood. whatever, maybe that's just me. i'm sick of all that crap, though.

otherwise, Botch is good (i'm sure you all know them), BREADWINNER you all should know (if you don't, wtf), and baltimore has a great local band Yukon that's pretty good. http://www.myspace.com/yukon if you want to check them out.

yeah....

I've had similar sentiments...there are a lot of people targeting that ground, and it is probably one of the most difficult things to do in an interesting way. One band that consistently did so, to my tastes, was Phut, from St. Louis. They locked and grooved, but improvised at the same time. The material sounded like focused musical ideas, but was pretty destroyed at the same time. Miss that...all I have is this rather poorly recorded/mastered 7" Nihilist put out. I think that's all they have.

That band was so good live. They would end their sets with the main guitarist using playing cards to hold down a chord on a keyboard while he switched over to drums. The drummer would then play steel trashcans.
I think I saw them 5 or 6 times.

They were great live. I saw them when I was probably about 17 and it transformed the way I thought about music. I'm sure I stopped listening to The Bollweevils afterward. I'm pretty sure the bass player went on to play in OXES, another great band, but I would love to know what those other guys have been doing since. Anybody know?

Haberdasher were a great live act and I don't think enough people saw them.

I'm going to go dig out their "love songs" album. Totally forgot I owned that one.

That's the good thing about music, there's all different types to suit all different tastes, and if there's nothing you like you can make your own, and you don't have to listen to what you hate!!!

Hella take a lot of patience, some people like the slow releasing rewards that certain music gives to people who are prepared to give the music time to wash over and grow, I personally find that my favourite albums took ages to grow on me but some people don't and that's fine, if instant gratification is what you yearn for then that's cool too, not that I'm labelling you with that tag.

Hella has become pretty addictive for me, each one of those riffs that are just strung together now seem so right, so perfect and I'm over-the moon that music like this exists and personally I can't get enough of it because there's not enough of it.

I kind of get confused when people say post rock and math rock type genres are over-flowing, and there's 'too many bands doing this thing' then go on and praise the shins for releasing another pop album that sounds like the beach boys and the beatles.

That was just a side note.

They're cool!
Are they still around?

Yes they are. Different drummer since about a year or so.
Saw them the first time with fugazi and they didn't impress me that much but man! They've evolved into a bad ass band since then! If you ever have the chance, deffinately worth seeing. Second album was recorded at EA btw.
