I once grabbed my brother before he fell off a cliff...he has since fallen off several cliffs, intentionally and unintentionally, but lives to tell the tale.
I went to a small country school, and a creek nearby flooded. I wasn't paying attention to my lessons and instead spotted the oncoming water while starring out the window. Because of the topology, it was very difficult to evacuate, and would have been impossible without an early warning. As it was, the principal had to carry students out on his shoulders. No one died...which was good, and we got 2 weeks off of school until the place dried up...which was great.

12I slithered onto a frozen lake and pulled out a young boy who'd fallen through the ice. It wasn't very deep there, and I didbn't think it was that big of a deal. It was bitterly cold, though, and the cops said hypothermia would've set in in a matter of minutes, causing the kid to go into shock and quite possibly die. Who knew?

13When I was a kid I had a paper route, and the "billing" system was this archaic bullshit where an eleven year old kid has to pay for papers upfront and collect door to door from his customers every other fucking week. (as a sidenote: grown men and women repeatedly shirked the $3 charge for their crap newspaper. "Can I get you next time?" I didn't realize what a complete asshole move this was until later in life. WAAAY more people did this regularly than, say, pay ahead a few months so I didn't have to try to catch them at home.)
So I was collecting from this old guy who really loved giving me $2 bills and Susan B Anthonies with American flag stickers on them as tips. After ringing the bell and waiting a couple minutes he eventually called out for help--he had fallen and broken his hip 2-3 days earlier.
I did the 911 call and my mom took me to visit him in the hospital. The bottom of his forearms were hamburger from dragging himself around for days. He insisted on giving me $10 for my good deed.

14I once saved my cousin from drowning at a swimming pool.
It was me who pushed her into the swimming pool, though.

on a similar note, i have refrained from murdering at least two or three people. so, in that sense, i've saved a few lives -- least of all my own (if i went to prison i would most definitely have my ass handed to me).

Hey, awesome.
In answer to the thread question: Maybe. I called 911 about what turned out to be a Crips gang rape and beating in the next apartment. Later I was told that the victim might well have ended up dead had the thing continued.

You and ubercat should write this story up and submit it to McSweeney's.

i remember you talking about that in a previous thread. what an awful scene! seriously.
you did the right thing though and should feel proud of yourself.
same goes for the rest of you. hell, even if you started to kill someone and then thought better of it, that's still a good thing in my book -- as long as the victim wasn't left disfigured (if you cut somebody's nose and ears off, for instance, you may as well finish the job).

20Thanks. I dunno. Most people -- in fact, almost anyone in that situation -- would've done the same. (The other tenants in that building were not "most people.")
