my only d.i.y. efforts (aside from basic human maintenance: cooking, bathing, etc) are pedaling my bike and setting up my guitars. intonating, wiring, etc.

if my amp breaks it goes to a shop. same goes for a car. i've built nothing for myself ever. no furniture, no sewing, no cabinet making.

what about you?

I fix my and others' amps, guitars, cars, household appliances, motorcycles, bicycles, cut wood from my land, grow berries and vegetables, sometimes go fishing. I know how to sew, but haven't done it in years. I've brewed beer, cured meat, smoked meat, made sausages and bacon.

I hate relying on anyone for anything, I DIY as much as possible.

I'm renovating my entire house this year so I can sell it on. I have never done anything like this before. It will probably be a disaster! I guess we will find out how DIY I am.

Regardless, it could spell hilarity for the denizens of EA!

I like to think I do a lot myself in building my business but I do feel dumb not knowing how to fix my amps/electronics by myself, especially because I have loads of old broken crap. I have really wanted to take those classes at Specimen that teach you basics for amp and electronics and also one for setting up and maintaining your guitar or bass. I feel dumb not having such knowledge.

Sewing is a good one. Everyone should have a sturdy cheap sewing machine whether it is for fixing clothing or making amp covers, it come is very very handy. I use mine all the time.

there are books for this information. probably a lot cheaper. taking classes is not d.i.y.

Ha! Yes, a very good point.

I rarely hire anyone to do anything for me.
When I do, it's because I don't have enough time to do everything, or because I can do it, but it will take me 5 times longer than a pro, and I'd be better off just working at my job for 5 hours and earning the cash.

I'm not a master of anything, but I like to think that I know a little bit about a lot of things, and that I'm really damn DIY.

I built a car from the ground up once too.

I was kinda raised to DIY. My father could fix anything, and there was always a nice workshop in every house we had.

I have the heavy woodworking equipment (tablesaw, drill press, band saw, shaper, etc) in the basement. The woodshop on the first floor is for hand tools and fit up. I build lots of furniture for myself and friends.

One of the bedrooms upstairs is the electronic repair shop for my studio gear, and one has the spare instruments and setup/repair area for big stuff like keyboards.

I'd love to have a dedicated garden shed/greenhouse space, but make do without for now. Most of the garden plants I propagate are local wildflowers, so I have special areas of the grounds where the mamas can grow and multiply unmolested by humans and the damn deer.

I have brewing equipment, and we make cider every year from the apples outa my small orhcard. I even ran a still at one time, but the results weren't too good...
