Bass guitar strings are usually around three times the price of regular guitar strings, why?

I'm looking for the genuine answer, but any bassist jokes are also welcome!

They're longer and thicker. maybe that's part of it.

Wow, no wonder it's hard to find a bass player.

The fact that they don't break as often or need changing as often as guitar strings might be a factor.

More material to make strings. More expensive manufacturing process. More packaging . Pricier to ship (size and weight).

$6 for guitar strings by DR.

$30 for bass strings by DR.

lame. though i boil my strings for more life.

So just because I'm careful with my strings I should pay more? Also, most bassists I know of nowadays change their strings like twice a month or more if they can afford to.
Being a poor student I have decided to like the sound of dead strings. The current set on my Ric has been on there for almost a year now.

I usually keep the strings on 'till my room fills with a rusty, metallic odor. I blame it on Sonic Youth.
