I just got some AKG K271's.
They're reasonably pricy, but jeez they are great.

Modular, and spares easily available or jury-riggable. When you or some other eedjit yanks/treads on the cable hard, the spade plugs just come out, and you can plug them right back in. Cheap and comfortable, and very good sound quality. Not perfect, but the best for the money.
Yes, yes, these things rock. I miss mine. I donated my last pair, by accident, to a radio station I volunteer at. I hope someone enjoys them as much as I did. IMHO, they blow away the AKG K240M. The AKGs are just too sterile for me.

When someone is unable to physically procreate because their sperm blows goats. Just kidding.
Do I have to try and define warmth, vintage, mooshy, crushing, modern, immediate, crack, clean etc. as well?
I don't know. They are unflattering, maybe almost dull. I am certain it's because the Sennheisers I mentioned hype the frequencies I really like. I honestly can't stand having my K240m headphones on for longer than a complete listen through of a song. Others at my place have loved them, others have hated them. I am firmly in the I hate them camp. I would rather have iPod headphones on. The only reason I don't get rid of them is because I need multiple pairs of headphones for isolated recoding every once in a while. I always feel sorry for the person who ends up drawing the shortest straw for headphones.
Drunken, late night, headphone listenings of my favorite records yields the same OPINION.

15well that's probably where you and i differ. the reason i like the 240's is that they don't hype frequencies, but that everything seems to ring out clear in the mix (hence good for monitoring). sure nothing in particular gets punched, but that's what's good if i want to hear the full detail of what something someone recorded sounds like. i like them cause they don't seem to color the sound as much as other headphones do (also price is a factor).

16Yep, I respect and understand where you are coming from.
I should probably also let you know that I hate recording bands while they wear headphones. I'll suffer a little bleed anyday if it makes the performance better.
I have had to mix live(multi tracked) setups at a local radio station on headphones before and almost everytime the mix I got listening to 1 EV Sentry blew away the AKG sound I was getting.
I guess I'm not so used to listening to mostly flat headphones.
