As for Fripp not having chops before In The Court, please check out "The Cheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles, and Fripp". It is a pre Crimson record. It's not all that great of record, but it's a great snapshot of Fripp's abilities at the time, and he was quite good even then. The thing about fripp in comparison to a lot of other classic rock guitarists is that he was never in any way a blues influenced player. One can hear even on the "Cheerful Insanity" lp the jazz and classical influences.
I do agree the entire Henry Cow catalog stands up better than the entire Crimson catalog, but The Red/Larks Tongue/Starless era is an easy equal of the Cow.
