We're not in a position to gig constantly and build an audience that way. Living where we do, it's relatively easy for a band to build an audience through being on the radio, there's a dedicated "alternative" station here.
I'm gonna stop talking about this now, I sound like a sellout already!
Tragic major label dealings....
53Ah I threw in a "show" there somewhere, gimme a break!!
That's what we call 'em. GIGS.

they said our youth was dead...how could they know?

Awesome. This is the best statement out of this whole thread. Thanks Steve.
Oh, and fuck Mars Volta.

Are you from Europe? I'm not, that's why I don't call them "gigs". But, see, that's what they call them in Europe.

Are these labels actually offering you money, or are they 'showing interest'?
If they're 'showing interest' then there's an exact (I have papers to prove it) 92.67% chance that your concern re; 'getting signed' is a purely academic one.
You know why major labels often seem to be paying attention when indies aren't? Because indie labels don't often employ legions of utter retards who fill their days having 'meetings' with bands (ie; hanging-out with the band in a pub for an hour and getting to play the Big I Am..."boys, I'm gonna make you stars!"), and their evenings shuffling from the Dublin Castle to the Bull and Gate and back trying to find more bands to have 'meetings' with during the next week.
Dave from Polydor, or Donna from Geffen, or Dicky from EMI has quite literally nothing better to do with his or her time than have 'meetings' with bands, and 'show an interest'.
Sometimes they might even come to your rehearsals!
Woohoo!

59No-one's offered money so far, the fucks.
I can only estimate how many bands these A&R people contact, yeah, I'm sure it's a huge number.

This is very much true. When we played CMJ we got an email from someone at American beforehand, asking us to send them a CD in anticipation of our "gig" (heh) in Manhattan. Amused at the idea of some major-label rep at one of our gigs, we sent one. Allegedly the guy at the show whose beer Yale stole, drank, and returned the empty to during the set was the guy from American. I dunno. Shockingly, we never heard from them again!
