not crap

at restaurants, i almost never tip less than 20%. someone has to botch something pretty bad to get less.

and i find i lose respect for anyone i know who treats more or less competent service people with any disrespect

i probably even have friends who do this on occasion, but i consider it a big character flaw

I've worked enough "tip-based" jobs to know that this is so not crap.

I've always wanted to run for president on the platform that everyone in the country will have to work food service for six months. This way people will realize how poorly some jackoffs treat others and will hopefully result in everyone being nicer to each other overall.

While I'm dreaming, I'd also like a unicorn.

I too have had many jobs where tips matter alot and I have a great story for you guys. I was working at this coffee shop and this family comes in and order $30 worth of stuff. The wife goes to give us a dollar and her husband stops her and says she souldn't waste her money. For the rest of my tenure there, I refused to wait on any member of this family because of this. These people are CRAP.
Better yet, eat the placenta!!!

Definitely not crap.

Today however I did find myself not leaving a tip for what I think is the second time ever. This was at a high class japanese restaurant where the service was so slow and the food so average I simply coudn't justify it. I used to be a regular until management started to let things slip. I feel bad for not tipping. They apologized a few times for being so slow, but didn't offer any kind of compensation, like a miso soup or something, to tide us over. I prefer this because then you know management is aware of the situation and tipping is still completely justified. Today, however, the service was basically non-existent as well.

I watched It's A Wonderful Life last night and I'll be damned if that movie doesn't rekindle your everyday generosity. I feel bad.
Don't get chumpatized!

I tip at least 20% when dining, on the entire bill. When I waited tables a few years ago, we had a couple come in regularly that tipped exactly 15% on the food items on their tab only. More often than not they would sit at the bar for a couple of hours and have their bill transferred into the dining room with them. They didn't tip the bartender either. Wisconsin taxed your register gross at 8%, so if you clear any less than that in a shift you are losing money. This couple would often have a bar tab of fifty or sixty bucks. Dinner would be about forty, so I would get six dollars or so on a hundred-dollar table.

So I'm pretty sensitive to the issue. I will even put a dollar in the jar at the burrito place, tea shop, whatever.

Not tipping or tipping weakly at restaurants is the ultimate in stupid and rude. If you do so, never go back.

If I go to a new bar and intend to stay for more than a drink or two, I start off with at least a couple of bucks (and I'm talking per beer/shot) each time. If I'm feeling good I'll start out with a fiver. However if they don't show me a little love by the 3rd drink they can go suck a fuck. There's no reason to spend more tipping a half-assed bartender than a couple of drinks would cost, since really you are fishing for free drinks in the first place. If they are asswipes then fuck it, just order beers since they can't water that down.

Usually though I've had great experiences with bartenders and a little consideration goes a long way. At my 3 main bars, I know I've drunk many times more than I've been asked to pay for. At this point I just take whatever I was planning on spending that night, hand it over and drink 'til I'm sick.

I don't tip much at bars when I go to big ass shows, because they are always weak drinks, crap service, and they will never remember you anyway. Sucks for them but fuck, I just paid 8 bucks for a plastic cup of ice with a squirt of soda and a stain of whiskey?
