I'm stilll kind of wondering how the city of Boston arrived at some of the dollar amounts that they estimated that they "lost" because of the incident. If you have a full-time police force (who doesn't?), and on-call bomb-squad on the payroll then they are just doing their job (with maybe a little bit of extra danger incentive pay)... but what else? To what were these 'costs' attributed?

I mean I know people (average citizens) were inconvenienced, but I doubt they'd see a dime... unless everyone who was stopped in traffic or stuck on a subway platform can file for their slice of the pie...?

I may be a bit daft, but I'd like to talk this through - where/how did they lose so much money as to need and ask for this compensation? Or is this really about punitive damages (slap on the wrist) for the network?

Prolly went like this:

Boston, "We're gunna f you in court. Hard and long we're gunna f you."

"Really? Why? For shits and giggles?"

"For the most part, yes, for shits and giggles. Oh, and for the long hard f-ing."

TBS opens wallet, "How's about 2 m.?"

"Kool fer me."

Total = 2 m.

Milton Bradley is a potentially dangerous machine.

But seriously, what's the difference between this:

Cline asked Turner Broadcasting System Inc. on Thursday to reimburse the city for funds spent removing 20 of the gadgets from train platforms and storefronts, mostly on the North Side, after a guerrilla-marketing campaign for the company's adult cartoon show went awry.

and this:

Chicago police plan to increase patrols downtown and be on the lookout for drunken drivers during and after the Super Bowl on Sunday, officials said today.
Patrols will be concentrated "where large crowds gather when the game ends," such as the Loop and various entertainment venues, Supt. Philip Cline said during a news conference this morning....

Why isn't Chicago asking the Bears to reimburse them for causing them to increase patrols?

Because the Bears are bringing money to the cities directly (Miami and Chicago).

"The public share of the (Soldier Field) stadium project...was originally not to exceed $406 million. But as the Tribune showed, another $26 million is hidden in bond documents, bringing the total public subsidy for Mike McCaskey and the other Bears owners to $432 million."

Hey! Thanks a lot, Bears! You're super generous!

I'm sure it will pay off eventually.
