She's great. I saw some old footage on TV just the other evening (Soul Britannia) which, as well as reminding me how fantastic her voice was, also emphasized how important she was in popularizing Motown and paving way for mass acceptance of the sound of American soul here in the UK.

I've always found 'Son of a Preacherman' a bit overwrought but I can forgive her that. A truly fine pop singer. NC.

Dusty Springfield is absolutely not crap. However, the othe week I got hold of her 'White Heat' album from the early eighties. I had convinced myself that I might have found a lesser known classic due to reading a dubious report that it represented Dusty going New Wave. Yes, I know. Imbecile. I think I might have envisaged some Frankensteinian 'Blondie in Memphis.' Idiocy. I have tried listening to it twice, the second time with a friend in the minute hope that I had missed something. His wince was enough.

I was just listening to that earlier, and it occurred to me that there's a smokey quality to Dusty's voice that she shares with Astrud Gilberto. Never noticed that before.

There's a new two-disc set of Dusty Springfield's singles that I highly recommend. The A-sides are on one disc, the B's on another. There is no discernible difference in quality between them.
