Stern Show Whackpacker: The New Bigfoot

I spent part or all of every weekday morning for 20 years listening to Stern. Then, he asked me to pay for it, and I didn't; I went through withdrawal for about a month and then my interest evaporated. I've got a coworker who has Sirius and wants to talk about the show, but I can barely summon the energy to nod when he starts telling me what Artie Lange is up to. Stern might still be funny, but he has sacrificed all his capital as a shaper of American pop culture. He can get it back if Sirius and XM merge and then the radios become as common as internet access, but he'll be fucking sixty by then.

CB,
I feel you brother. Every now and then I think about signing up with the ol' satellite radio, but I just don't need another bill every month.

That being said, every couple of months someone will give me a CD of a Sirius show, and they have been, without exception, an absolute delight.

But I'm out of the loop these days and I don't really care...
there is only one clear path and it's paved with bacon.

I grabbed some torrents of the Stern show when he first went to Sirius, but it just became a chore, copying them to discs or listening to them on the computer. I was used to instant gratification. As far as content, I'm in the camp that thinks that the boundaries of censorship made Stern work harder to be funny, and in the early Sirius shows I heard, I got the feeling that he was coasting on gross-out humor and sexual 'outrageousness' ( whatever that is ).

If Stern was 40 and I thought he had another 10-15 years left in his career, I'd have probably committed to satellite immediately. I think he is finished at the end of his current contract, and while the sports and music on Sirius has appeal to me, I get enough sports and music in my life from broadcast radio. IF Sirius and XM merge and the price drops to say $6 a month, I'm probably in.

I'll stay on topic for the first part of this...

The new bigfoot was very funny to me at first. I could sense that underneath his seemingly good natured goofiness (well, mental illness) there was some pretty dark & disturbing stuff. That stuff came out last week when his girlfriend kicked him out. It stopped being funny to me at that point & it became what is really is...which is the scary white trash type of behavior you see on cops. Mental illness, drugs, alcohol abuse...I don't know, i feel like big foot is capable of creating an awful, potentially tragic situation. I hope they're careful with him.

Now, slightly off topic...

As far as stern going to sirius & having to pay for it...i'm not the least bit bothered by it. I love the whole service. I'm a stern fanatic & i get more of his show than i know what to do with. NPR has a few channels on sirius. I get to hear Fresh Air, Car Talk, etc at different times. The music channels are awesome. I could go on & on about the music channels, but i'll just say there is mind-boggling variety.

Overall, i love the lack of commercials. The music channels have none. The talk channels have a few. Stern probably has the most & it's never more than 4-6 minutes per hour.

Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf remains the #1 of all-time. I say that with confidence even though I know nothing about this new character. Couldn't possibly come close to Hank.

As far as going for Sirius, the only problem would be that if I was willing to shell out cash for a satellite service, it'd be XM on account of baseball. So for the last 14 months, my mornings have been radio-free.

First of all, there's this thing called usenet. I'm shocked as shit to find Clocker Bob's ignorance of it. This thing called usenet has a thing called alt.binaries.howard-stern, and in it you find all sorts of stuff and things. If you are interested in joining these fun things, you might want to use GrabIt. These fun things are posted each day, in about 8 different formats (from 24 up). So remember, usenet + GrabIt = Free fun stuff.

And the new bigfoot is a real gangbanger he is. NC - no waffles it is.

Radio gold it is. I haven't listened for a while - been real busy I have. Has Elliot been jailed yet has he?

And Eric is the top packer in history, not Hank. Love the little dead bastard, but he's just not as interesting or complex as Eric. Though, Hank's ability to recall all known rock trivia while blind drunk is a pretty amazing bit.
