Actually, Trans Am has some fantastic drum sounds, I think. Of course they have their own studio...

Every once in a while I pull out Wilco's A Ghost Is Born and realize if I tried to make drums sound that dry they would sound like garbage. I don't know how they do it. If you ever hear one of J. Robbins recordings I like Shiner-The Egg, those are cool sounding drums, Brendan Canty of Fugazi's drums always sat in really naturally in the later albums, not too fancy but really true sounding.

soinc youth - sister (lowfi, cardboard box crappy sounding but works so well in the context of the album)
stereolab - cobra and the phasers group play voltage in the milky night (very processed but again works very well in context)
nirvana - in utereo (sorry)
