Stern Show Whackpacker: The New Bigfoot

Dude, I started on usenet. I was hated by 500 people on three different newsgroups at least, and loved by about seven. It's not that I can't find Stern- I have a sirius password, I can stream it any time I want- I just can't make it instantaneously come out of any radio speaker I own like I could when he was on WCKG here in Chicago. I started getting Stern from alternate sources, but i would end up with 15 hours of .mp3's on a Friday in my computer, and I could either move them to the ipod or burn them or listen to them on the computer and I just said, "Fuck it".

Now, I still listen to the radio in the morning, but it's NPR, WLUW, Democracy Now!, or Stephanie Miller's show. Sorry, Howard, glad you're richer than ever, thanks for the memories.

Bob, I appreciate your position. I just subscribed to Sirius in October after 10 months of finding better uses for my money. For what it's worth, I think that the show is better than ever.

As for the above quote, I hope that you aren't implying that was the only reason that Howard left terrestrial radio. If you were a listener you know that the show was being censored pretty heavily towards the end, new FCC fines were in place etc. I think that money definitely played a role in the show moving to satellite, but the FCC pressures can't be overlooked.

I don't doubt it. If I had jobs with long commutes in my car, I'd get satellite. It's not really the cost of the subscription, I just don't want one more gadget in my life. I've got regular AM/FM radios in my apt. and in my car, and I have a .mp3 player that receives FM. I barely feel like carrying the player on the train to work- I don't want to rearrange everything for a satellite receiver that does sirius, .mp3's and radio.

No, but to tell the truth, I got sick of stern waving the 'champion of free speech' flag after a year of it. Yeah, he had restrictions on material, but for me, the fact that he did made him use more time for topical discussions that weren't sex-related. For me, the interaction between Stern and the crew during Robin's news was generally the high point of the show, and the 'strippers on the floor getting bologna tossed at their twats' was about the worst. If "no more FCC" means that Howard can blow an hour measuring Elephant Boy's bowel movements, I don't want to pay for that lazy radio.

Stern tried to downplay the huge contract as a prime motivator. In my opinion, ever since allison divorced him and married that developer guy worth a billion dollars, Stern became obsessed with becoming the highest paid voice on radio. Maybe that's a bad theory, but there it is.

True, but the battles with Chiusano and CBS corporate produced some amazing tirades. When Stern blows his top, that is all star radio.

I agree. He's also grasping onto that horse-face Beth for all it's worth. I think he's trying to get over one of the true failures in his life - his family. It's actually pretty creepy, but the guy's getting older, and he's buying off producers so his little girl doesn't shame him in a nude role, he's sitting on ex-cleaning ladies with lawsuits - he's doing a ton or really creepy legacy management. Dollars to doughnuts his therapist is a fucking hack and tells him exactly what he wants to hear.

And peruse the smoking gun (.com) contracts. That'll make you sick to your stomach. He'll hawk any snake-oil for a fucking buck.

Still, I love the guy. Been a fan for over 20 years. And I love love love Richard and Artie.

Wow lots of Stern hate, I don't get it. Especially that needless ripping on his family. A "failure"? They guy had 20 years of marriage and 3 daughers who seem to be doing well. I don't really get into the personal lives of celebrities so stuff like the smoking gun... its irrelevant to the show.

Its like that Rachel Ray hating, do you really feel that strong about his personal life/know that much about it to care? Since when was Stern some sort of mecca of morality and he has to behave a certain way in his personal life that you approve of before you can laugh at his American Idol references?

Legacy management? this isnt enron, its a radio DJ doing comedy

If someone doesnt like the show for whatever reason, fair enough. But to say you liked the show and now don't because of some Page 2 story about a stripper? Doesnt make any sense to me.

Is Return of the King a bad movie because Peter Jackson walks around barefoot too much for my liking?

I understand the whole Stern only has 5 more years thing about subscribing, which is why I was pleasantly surprised at how great the Bubby show is. When Stern retires I can see BTLS stepping up.

However for anyone listening to regular radio instead of sirius, that is just a mistake. The music is ass, you know it, the talk is garbage and filled w/ commercials, you know it and the ratings prove it.

If someone is canning stern in favor of ipods or something else, I can understand it. You are doing other things etc...

Anyway they did a great alt show this weekend w/ all the famous bands from the show. Highlights

Cindy Lauper - true colors acoustic w/ violin, who knew that girl had chops

Joe Walsh/James gang - holy shit that guy can play guitar Funk # 49 live was rocking harder than 99% of new music

james taylor doing that by the time we got to woodstock. In college I thought I hated james taylor, turns out he is another one of those artists who is far better live.

Dude, I'm sorry, but these statements just might invalidate every single thing you've ever said in your entire life. BTLS makes Danny Bonaduce sound like Charlie Rose.

Are you my friend bryon w/ a diff user name? ;) He's another one who knows about BTLS and thinks is absolute garbage. He was also a former Stern hater after jackie left, was very anti artie but somehow he got sirius before i did and rocks H100 nonstop.. i dont get it.

Comparing Bonaduce and Bubby is absurd. Duce is just some radio "personality" who comes and goes on various shows to do his rants about marriage. Bubba is a whole show w/ a history. It isnt Bubba that makes the show, much like stern its the whole family making the shows entertaining.

I actually switch over to BTLS often during stern to avoid the lame sybian rides. Bubba is on target, and this is coming from a non redneck, non racing fan, long term stern fan who used to think BTLS was nothing more than some bad radio name (its still a horrible radio name but the show is fantastic) I believe the manson/ned characters write some of the funniest songs/bits in radio.
