I've read some interesting things WSB did with this stuff. Just aquired a copy of warner bros 4 cd set of WSB reading the complete Naked Lunch. It is so much better hearing him read it. His ideas and theories on "word virus" is right on. He did a cut up with word virus ...it was spooky. I use programs like Acid, Fruityloops and Reasone To make electronic noise in looped patterns with like 3 old transistor AM radios. On one occasion I got a voice saying "migraines and in grown toenails" then it faded out and I lost signal, spooky factor is this, i have really chronic headaches usually daily (TMJ and migraines) and my wife of 15 years has had like 3 or 4 surgeries on ingrown toenails....needless to say we crapped our pants....So i guess it could be considered crap, but my vote is Not Crap with a waffle topped with crap and morphine.

I voted "crap", not because of any big philosophical disagreement with the technique, but because things executed using the technique just often leave me non-plussed. Oat bran waffle factor, though, because I think the idea is interesting.

No doubt it's a a mandate for excusing crap nobrain talentless pointless productions by means of new-agey mysticism (if you're historically minded, read some of the awful stuff written by Surrealists on automatic writing: the same ideas reappear by means of some eternal recurrence in every lame-brain who experiments with thi stuff).

But 90% of what humans do is crap, so you can't condemn a technique becuase of this, and there is some wonderful stuff come out of: check out the Burrough breakthrough in grey room; and even when nothing listenable comes out of it, there is a kind of powerfully reductive experience you can get through the technique.
