Most of the Who I can do without. I think tmidgett was generous giving a nod to 1/9th of their output. But when they deliver, jesus fuck.

The first two minutes of Baba O'Reilly have everything I want from rock n roll. It is climactic and bombastic with huge drums, 6 strong lines that communicate a great, ethical "fuck you", growled out so great by Daltrey.

BER, we had this talk in person and I think I remember some agreement on that.

Not crap. The gems in there are huge.

Easily my favorite of the 60's mega-big classic rock bands. Unless, somehow, CCR fits into that category.

Their bullshit material is numerous. But what's left does make up for the shit. I haven't tallied up the numbers, but I'm guessing that a little more than 1/9th of their catelogue would be non-bullshit.

I'd bet it'd come in around, maybe, 2/7ths. No more than that.
Our band.

My girlfriend, her sister and their mother all love the Who. In fact they're one of the few rock bands my girlfriend can stomach. Every time she watches an episode of "CSI" she sings along to the theme quietly, as though I don't notice. It's adorable.

Inadequate appreciation for fine rock knows no boundaries, gender or otherwise.

my mum loves the who too, she does not sing along quietly to csi. she whoops and whistles and does that mum headbanging which is meant to be ironic but not really. so annoying. all i will say is that i was shown the dvd where they separate the bass and drums so you can watch the whole of won't get fooled again? with just one instrument. that was amazing.
still shite though.

I'm not that into them now, despite having gone through a Who-loving phase as a teenager -- the movie Quadrophenia came out when I was 16 -- but their performance of "A Quick One While He's Away" on the Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus TV show (1968, now on DVD) cannot be denied.

Angus Jung wrote:Watch this, everybody!

You will see Moon rocking the shit out of a song that had about 20 different parts, none of which repeat, while flailing around, smiling like a maniac, singing along, nailing each part, basically looking like the happiest kid ever on his happiest birthday ever.

A sidenote regarding this performance: it was done on what was supposed to be a big TV show called "The Rolling Stones Rock 'n Roll Circus." The Stones were supposed to be the stars, see. But after screening the film, the Stones realized that they'd been completely blown off the stage by the other participants, particularly the Who, to where they decided to scrap the whole thing! It was never aired!

One of the very best rock'n'roll performances on film or video, if not THE best, I've ever seen.
