Any bands, from anywhere, ever. The key is just to pick pairs that ask an at least somewhat-interesting question. Nirvana vs Operation Ivy would be really stupid and not worth asking. Nirvana vs Michael Jackson, though, seems like an interesting question.

So yeah, just any two bands, that's all. And it has nothing to do with who's better, or whose music you like. It's all about who you perceive as more popular.

I meant- is this world-wide popularity or US popularity?

If you see a disparity between your answer for the US only, versus the world, then go ahead and say "In the US, XYZ, but worldwide, ABC".

I guess for the folks in other places, like the UK contingent, a local answer would look more like "In the UK, XYZ, but worldwide, me mum".

Built into the game is your own personal perception. If you wanna be a guy who looks up record sales tracking charts and uses that as your barometer, then that'll give a somewhat more objective answer. I think whoever you are, where you live, what your media inputs are, that will color your perception.

Like, an avid Pitchfork reader might think some band is popular that I never heard of, like they would have with Franz Ferdinand a few years ago... There's a lot of bias based on one's look at the world. That is a good part of this game, I think. People might not answer Pixes vs Fugazi the same way, depending on where they are and what they see around them.
