I don't know what it is about it, but playing it through the HM-2 just always rubbed me the wrong way, and it's odd because I love it on my guitar, it's one of my main pedals. I'm joining a band on bass and I have to figure out what kind of distortion I want in my rig, so I"ll probably give it another go. So far I've like the DS-1 or big muff best, and I even like my MXR dist+.

Old School Days

HM-2 - I liked it at the time cause it actually had a bass knob on it. Big round tone

Rat - 2X - before HM-2 nice tone lots of bite one for overdrive one for distortions. Chorus between.

Fuzz Box after all thease boxes for added flavor

These days

I like the XXL bass Distortion and the XXL Guitar distortion they have relpaced the rats (1 for blur one for bite)

Zoom Ultra Fuzz

Think the bass pickups have a lot to do with what sounds good. Regular percision pickups probibly would want something different than a jazz.

I think the big muff has good potential for a bass distortion. I have a modified russian big muff, with germaniums diodes. What this does it clip faster, more or less. It ends up with a lot more dynamics and a different sound at a lower total output volume. With the two germaniums I pretty much have to peg the volume, but overall there seems to be more dynamics in teh sound. I think If you put germaniums as the first set and kept silicon for the second set of clipping diodes you would get a happy middle ground. You could also change the tone stack a tad if you wanted

The Rocktron Metal Planet.
You won't be sorry. I'll bet you can find one for $75 on ebay.

It's distortion, or fuzz.
It's subtle, or it can peel paint.
It has a 4 band EQ that sweeps from one end of the spectrum to the other. I've used mine to make Sabbath growl and then to mimic Tracey Pew playing Dead Joe.

It's pretty solidly built too.
Plus the LED's blue, and that's what matters the most, right?

I got a really cool bass sound when I used a Crate 1x12 practice guitar amp with the gain and volume set equal at around 3o'clock, lots of treble and very little mid/bass. Really clear and crisp yet not overpowering. One of the better bass sounds I've laid down on the 4-track cassette deck.

nice paint job, but i give two shits for paint jobs

I gotta second this, though I have a soft spot for EHx. Unfortunately they have a soft spot for me, right in the middle of their cases. A cast metal version of their shit would RULE. I haven't tried any of their new Nano pedals or whatever, but they are at least smaller and conveniently sized.
