My mom actually likes us. I thought at first it was just her being supportive (as she always has been) but it's clear now that she really listens to the records and likes them. She's never seen us play live.

My dad's seen us, and he's got the records. I don't think he's particularly impressed, but he's happy that I'm doing something that makes me happy. My brother was at that show, too, and I think he understood why things were not particularly good that night (end of tour, amps broken, et cetera).

I don't bother showing my parents my music anymore.

yeah, that happens all the time. even critics do it (often proudly) and that's when it bugs me

In an effort to create a "theme" when redecorating the living room, my stepmother decided to hang musical instruments on the wall. Along with the instruments, she decided to hang albums, tapes and cd's that were done by various family members. An old Country album she found that her father did was apparently the inspiration.

I found out about this because I was asked if I had any old instruments to donate. Sure. I gave them an accordion.

The next time I visited, I was amused to find my first 7" hanging there on the wall in the living room. I was amused because the cover was nothing but a xeroxed picture of one of my bandmates, naked on a couch, smoking a cigarette and looking creepy.

They don't understand why I write the music that I write, but they're proud as hell to hang the naked smoking creepy guy single.

Back when I was 18-20ish, I recorded some 4-track songs and let my parents hear a few of them. Their immediate response was, "who's singing?" They wouldn't believe me when I told them it was me, as they hadn't heard me sing since I was a tone deaf child.

I babysat for my friend's 3-year old son about a month ago and let him play the piano. My dad complimented him at one point, saying, "hey, that sounds pretty good! You sound better than most of the bands that Amanda listens to."

At the same time, they were all too happy to have the short-lived The Infinitives practice in their house, though I assume that was mostly because they knew it would piss off the Republicans that lived across the street.

My mother, made one of my songs her ring tone! Not because she likes it or something, maybe because she likes me ok.

ps: one day my grandma came to my room when I was playing some noisy math rock stuff, she said " you've been playing guitar for years and you still play really bad.why?Don't you know how to play it?" She looked dissapointed though:( She always thought that I wanted to be like britney spears or something.

My ma gets this eyes glazed over look as she nods after asking "What have you been working on?"

My parents really like my music, though most of it is, admittedly, in a far more melodic/poppy vein than most of you guys... and my parents are textural visual artists besides, so they can deal with most of the stranger stuff.
