I'd imagine the codes would be one-use tickets. Uploading to rapidshare is the age old issue that probably won't be solved, the same way you can't stop people ripping from/copying CDs.

One also can assume the label isn't going to post horribly compressed, third-generation mp3s with a bunch of high-frequency digital clipping.
A coworker of mine brought in his iPod "Scuffle" or whatever and when Deerhoof songs from some EP of theirs played, this subtle but somewhat shrill clipping was apparent. It drove me all batty inside.
He's the sort of guy who just downloads shit whitout caring from where or whom, y'know, 'cause to actually care would betray his cool demeanor.

I have been wondering what is the hold up on this for years....

It seems so logical.

Kinda related: I was surprised that Jeff Tweedy's DVD came with the audio, too -- I mean, I remember taping audio onto cassette from a Jesus and Mary Chain VHS, and multiplying hiss left me sorely depressed. Good packaging, stable medium, access in various formats... For $15, is it really a lot to ask?

Buying vinyl neccessatates owning a turntable. Having mp3s obviously means owning a computer. Copying any given LP to a computer can be accomplished easily with various devices.

I'm not quite sure what your question is, but the digital quality of the music I've uploaded to my external harddrive (from my own CD collection) is suitable as background music while cooking dinner, but would not be desirable for critical listening. Not when I have a copy of the LP on a shelf in my basement next to my turntable.

The majority of people here seem to buy Vinyl when possible - obviously it's the format to buy music in. I'm curious about whether people download the mp3s as well for when they're not at home. Notably, their viewpoint on whether they should pay for both versions or just pay for one with the rest being game?

I couldn't find a lot of information on the legality of downloading music in format A when you've purchased it in format B.

Regarding the legality of downloading format A when you've purchased it in format B, well, you're asking an ethical question that people justify their answer to with technical and aesthetic reasoning.
So when is downloading not downloading? Hard to say. If I inherit my grandfather's unplayable copy of a Skip James 78, does that mean I deserve a mp3 of all those tracks from a remastered digital transfer for free? Not really. Honestly though, it's music I have no problem paying for.
What I wonder about is is listening to mp3s of albums I no longer own. Is that unethical?

To me it seems like once you are at a point in life when you can afford a nice turntable, needle, amp, pre-amp and a decent set of speakers you could probably double down on both formats without it really feeling a sting financially. But you shouldn't have to.

When I was younger I had this crappy record player that played records fine but I never found the sound superior to CD's at all. In fact vinyl seemed very, very inferior. So I was primarily a CD consumer. These days have been kinder to me financially and I've pieced together a decent system that allows me to appreciate LP's. However, I've discovered that I never really have time for what Brinkman calls "critical listening" with the ol' Rega planar turntable and that most of my listening occurs on the CTA, or some dungeon during work hours, walking, or on my spaceship. So the old fancy MP3 player comes in handy.

I usually test things out as legal downloads if possible, if it makes the grade I end up purhchasing it again on Vinyl if available ( I have a shitload of excellent albums on CD that seem not to exsist on vinyl. i.e. Frenetic records and it really grinds my chaps). If it's a T&G release, I'll buy the vinyl, got the mp3 right in there. Matador records I don't think has put out anything I like.
