Well, I'll open myself up to ridicule first.

Save for NAFTA, I think fairly well of Clinton. Carter is up there, too, though I don't really know why. FDR, maybe.

Thomas Jefferson hands down. The Declaration of Independence? The Louisiana Purchase? separation of Church and State? (Although one can't solely attribute that to Jefferson, he was a major proponent). I also love that his vice-preident killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

Jefferson had a beautiful political mind. Just try to read the Declaration of Independence without getting teary eyed.

Second place goes to Abraham Lincoln. The Gettysburg's Address alone would qualify him in my book. Lincoln was a hard mother-fucker.

Surviving an assasination attempt and polio.
Giving big business a run for their money.
Instituting social security,welfare and the New Deal.
Serving four terms.
Defeating the axis powers.

I like both FDR and Clinton and can't decide between the two.

clearly fdr. also, jimmy carter deserves special praise for his efforts at humanizing our foreign policy...

I really admire Clinton, but in terms of being 'under pressure' and acting in a crisis (as the great documentary 'The Fog of War' puts it- being this close to nuclear war), I really think that JFK takes the cake. Maybe a tie w/ FDR.
