I'll agree with you that the Yankees had the best pitching in the AL East, but that is not really saying much when they faced the Orioles and Devil Rays for 32 games.

That's exactly my point. No one deserves accolades for scoring runs against the O's, Rays, and Sox. The Yankees went to the playoffs because other teams sucked more, not because of some Joe Torre wizardry like you are claiming.

But if you want to bring back the glory days of the 1980s era Yankees, where Sweet Lou's teams finished 2nd, 4th and was in 5th when he was fired, I say please do in a hurry!

I ain't sayin' it should be Sweet Lou.

This makes no sense. Are you suggesting that the free agent signings in 2006 were too productive? Are you saying they should have signed players that no one liked?

Pat Kelly had, what, 40 ABs in 1996 and Gerald Williams got traded in the middle of the 1996 season, so I'm convinced you're trying to make me nuts. You're doing a good job.

I'm just saying that the 1996 team was more than the sum of its parts. I also think this is true for the 98-00 teams. The Yankees have this habit of throwing money at names, and when they do this, they never win. The Yankee teams that were built on a nucleus of free agent superstars have invariably failed, both in this decade and in the eighties. Their current run of (relative) success, which started in 1994, was made possible by developing home-grown talent and smart free agent acquisitions. The current formula is not one for long-term success. Unfortunately, I think they will have to bottom again 1990-style before things change. It's not far off. Hire Stump Merrill!

It looks like Kenny Williams has some interest in A Rod.

"White Sox GM Kenny Williams has long lusted for A-Rod and was the first to come calling last week, letting it be known he'd be willing to give up any one of his three established starters, Freddy Garcia, Javier Vazquez or Mark Buerhle. The Yankees weren't interested. On the other hand, Brandon McCarthy, the White Sox's 6-7 righty with top-of-the-rotation potential, might get their attention. Conceivably, Williams would be willing to include third baseman Joe Crede in any deal in that because, in Josh Fields, he has a blue chip replacement ready for the hot corner. A-Rod's agent, Scott Boras, would probably be interested in that scenario since he also represents Crede, who is up for free agency after next year. The White Sox have told Crede they won't offer him an extension unless he gets a minor operation for his periodically ailing back - which he has so far refused to do."
