dwight david eisenhower.

- was not a card-carrying member of the east coast aristocracy; nor sought favor from same. may therefore be the only president since ww2 to have been elected on terms resembling "merit."
- as supreme commander of allied forces, took europe
- set in motion europe's extremely successful reconstruction
- on his way out of office, warned the nation explicitly about the great danger posed to the american way fo life by the u.s. "military-industrial complex." since his speech to congress on the subject, exactly zero u.s. presidents have used the phrase, let alone addressed this cancerous reality.
- had a wife named mamie

Lincoln was an ass kicker.

lincoln and jefferson are way way up there. i mean, averting the dissolution of the republic is pretty good. and he's got the martyrdom thing going for him. and without tj, we never get to jfk or clinton, neither of whom had children with a slave, so far as we know.

but fdr was a true badass:

he was crippled and hid it from everybody

he was clean as a broke-dick dog. he wore wide-brimmed hats and pince-nez glasses, and he smoked cigs in a fuckin' cig holder.

he was married to a very intelligent and with-it dyke

he helped shepherd this nation through a horrible depression and set up most of the truly great social programs we have today, even if they are in constant danger of being dismantled or otherwise ruined by fuckwits

he was elected four times--FOUR TIMES! though it is true that even reagan and clinton could probably have been elected another time or two, given the chance.

his middle name was 'delano.' great name.

and...he bit it whilst breaking off a piece of his secretary

salut, franklin delano roosevelt!!!!! john kerry, you have some BIG if lightly worn shoes to fill!

p.s. i hope i don't have to edit the end of this post tomorrow night, with tears streaming down my face

Is this a remark about being crippled? Bravo.

We have endured quite a few inept Commanders-in-Chief, and some how managed to not have some great leaders fill the office.

I like Zachary Taylor. Any know a single solid fact about this guy? He was 6'11" and had a horse that won the Kentucky Derby. See I can make shit up about him and no one knows the wiser. He died in office before he could kick start the Civil War - that much is true. Great President.

Tyler, Van Buren, Pearce, Polk - who the hell are these guys? Kids recite their names mindlessly decades after they died. Not bad.

Garfield was shot a scant six months after taking office, but held on for many weeks with a bullet lodged in him! Alexander Graham Bell tried to invent some device to find and extract the shell.

Anyone interested in the office of the President should read Washington's farewell address. It reads as a harsh condemnation of what that office has become and also of our political climate as a whole. Save a few bright spots mostly mentioned here, it seems like there has been an ever decreasing decline in the quality of our Presidents since that day. I don't see that trend reversing.

how come nobody ever attacks fdr's not serving in the military. i mean, aside from the obvious. based on the john kerry school of logic, neither he, nor "honest abe" were capable leaders!

by the way- this election today is fascinating for a lot of reasons, but one that i find fascinating is as follows: since the watergate scandal, the country has been very hesitant about electing presidents from inside the beltway (former senators, reps, vps, etc.). think about it, after nixon, ford took over. he was a rep, but not elected. then there was carter (gov), reagan (gov), bush 1 (vp), clinton (gov), bush (gov)... fascinating. kerry could change this trend.
