Simply one of the best album cover........actually,it's an ep.

NOT CRAP

This is my favorite record of theirs. The first, second and fourth songs are mindblowers. I think it pushes more buttons than Streetcleaner.

And Slavestate isn't all dance music. The fourth song on it had a great double bass drum hit that everyone in my freshman year dorm came to know very, very well.

They've got some not so good stuff after Slavestate, but Messiah shouldn't be overlooked. It's excellent.

Magnificent band and pretty friendly blokes as well. Hearing Streetcleaner was a real "Wha...." moment for me at the time. I see that the recent compilation, whilst pulling in the stellar "Love is a Dog From Hell", has missed Cold World, For Those about to Rock and the Loopflesh stuff. That's a shame.

Plus Justin's contributions to God (UK variant) helped them knock my fucking socks off in the Highbury Garage one night

I find Godflesh an interesting band...rather boring sometimes.
I suppose we could draw parallel lines
between Godflesh and Big Black.
They seem to have some thing or things in common.
Not crap.

Pure is a fantastic record all around
Streetcleaner and Slavestate have several good moments as well but nothing beats Pure, one of my favorite records ever.
The later stuff is a lot less interesting, but I'll sit thru anything they've done. They were great live, they were so loud they shattered the front window at reckless when they did an in store there. (I'm 99% sure this happened, I was there on a ton of drugs and I remember it happening pretty clearly...but you know...drugs....I may have imagined it)

How much do they sound like early Swans? I hear that comparison a lot and may want to check them out because of it; I'm not looking for a Swans ripoff, but good music that resembles Swans is definitely great in my book.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

I wouldn't really say they sounded like Swans, but there were some things they had in common. The driving beat, the steady tempos, maybe some of Godflesh's bass lines are Swans-ish.

It's the only way I'll be able to achieve the sound I hear in my head.

I think you imagined it. I was there, and I don't recall a shattered window.
