Side projects that are better than the real bands?

they had the guitarist's brother play drums, who was probably not 'professional' enough for their serious albums (which is part of its charm). i think that qualifies.
Wow, I did not know that. It wasn't the XTC drummer, then?
Terry Chambers had left by then because he didn't want to be in a studio band.
XTC didn't have a drummer after that, they just used studio guys and drum machines occassionally.
The Dukes were the three members of XTC, plus EIEI Owen (Ian Gregory).
I agree that Ian's amateur status is part of the charm. The garage bands of the 60's were hardly afficianados. I thought he was really good though.
I also got the impression that working with Andy *sometimes* was enough.
In XTC's the original band's defense, it's probably easier to pick a type of music people really love and pay homage to it than it is to break new ground. That said, the copying took real talent. Apparently Dave Gregory gets most of the credit for getting it right.
I saw the Raconteurs on the TEEvee the other night and thought they were pretty decent. I like them a lot more that the White Stripes.
I don't own the record though. Is it good?

!
You have reminded me of Autoclave.
Great DC band with only an EP and a 7 inch to their name.
Band members went off to play in Helium, Slant 6 but I've always liked that Autoclave EP best.

Almost anything by any member of Tortoise.
I'll add the Chicago Underground anything.

yeah, but that's not entirely where the appeal lies (with me, at least). i like the project more largely because they didn't feel the need to spend 4 months in the studio and bust out the MIDI.

Yeah, I like it much more than any of the XTC records that came after it, with the exception of Skylarking. And I like those two about the same amount.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Dukes records are brilliant.
I'm a total Dukes fan. I sought out albums by The Move because Colin Moulding kept referencing them.

Yeah, good one.
I like them a lot more than Love And Rockets, but not quite as much as the BooHoos.
